Compassion Week March 17th-23rd
Northeast Bible Church is about compassion…what does that mean?
It simply means we want to obey God as he tells us to love one another or love our neighbor. Leviticus 19:9-19 paints an awesome picture of how we do this and finishes the statement very clearly. “…but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” You don’t define your neighbor, how to love or when to make it happen. “I am the Lord” leaves no doubt. No matter what, this is what we do and what we’re about.
Because God laid this command down to us so clearly we want to serve together in this and make it the priority in our lives as God intends. We are laying down some groundwork for each other to encourage and even challenge one another to make this a focus for our lives. Here’s the plan…
This our opportunity to serve together in the community of believers and stretch out to our neighbors. Find something your group can be passionate about and commit to it. Plan at least one event to do together as a Life Group to serve those around you. Your Life Group leader and compassion champion have a list of some suggested opportunities, you can check them out HERE as well or you can find your own. Some things to focus on are:
-How can we serve others in our community?
-How will God be seen to those who don’t know Him?
-How can we build relationships with those we serve?
This isn’t about pity or making ourselves feel better. Sometimes it will be hard but God calls us to put others before ourselves.
We’ll be sending out Compassion Challenges for the next few weeks. A compassion challenge is simply a suggestion for how you and your family can intentionally serve others in normal life situations. For example, next time you see the person in need standing at the corner of the intersection, offer them a sandwich instead of rolling up your window, or simply ask them how their day is going. Let’s change focus to making others a priority. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter to find out what we’re doing and join with us in making compassion a habit instead of an ideal we wish we could find time for.
March 17th to 23rd is our opportunity to bring focus on compassion in everything we do. We’ll move from weekly challenges to daily challenges to better see how we can be more compassionate in everything we do. We’ll also have a couple of opportunities to serve together in some local compassion projects so take some time out of your week to join us. Check back with us as we get closer to this date to find out about how we can work together. Finally, on Sunday, March 23rd, we’ll come together for Compassion Sunday. We want to take time to praise God for what He’s done. Sharing together in what’s happened and where He leads us is a great testimony of His love.
